The Phi mode also plays an important role when the delays are short and below 20 ms. I can honestly say that in conjunction with the analog filter, mixer, feedback, and the modulation portion of this pedal, I have dialed in some of the most satisfying and inspiring sounds to date. In fact, I have always been on a quest for that perfect backward sound in a pedal, especially when performing. The Phi button produces some of the best reverse delays that I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Creating these high pitch cascading lines.Īnother component that makes this pedal so unique is the Phi button. Thus, if the Delta mode is on 2x and you press the Delta button off, whatever you were playing goes up one octave, 3x one octave and a fifth, 4x two octaves, and 5x two octaves and a third. For example, while playing in the Delta multiplier mode, then shutting it off, you’re able to create shifts in pitch. My experience is that the more time I spend tweaking things, the better it sounds for my personal preference. The Delta multiplier can create so many different sounds, textures, and evolving loops. You have to spend time tweaking things and getting it right based on your amp, guitar, and also how you play. Truth be told, yes, the H9 is not a plug and play pedal. Hence, I got individual pedals for those - the MXR Van Halen pedals for phaser and Flanger, and the Drybell Vibe machine. However there are some sounds that I could never bond with - phaser, Flanger, and a vibe. Been getting into this stuff particularly after listening to the Grateful Dead Octave up - fantastic when combined with my sunface.Octave Down - Great when playing bass notes on the guitar. In the H9, I've been able to get the following good sounds: So getting individual pedals for them didn't make financial sense.

But, many of these effects are ones I'll use rarely. I've always liked a wide variety of effects. If I ever replaced it on my board it would remain in the studio arsenal. For me though, it takes my sound to a whole new level and does double-duty as a studio FX processor with impressive sound design capabilities. If all you need are standard classic effects with a simple interface there are many better choices. Another major selling point for me is the range of unique, weird, and avant-garde sonic possibilities it possesses. I have added the Barn3 OX9 switch and an expression pedal to increase functionality and I took the plunge on a GigRig Wetter Box for ultimate integration into a multi-amp wet/dry rig, so one could say that there are hidden extra costs in the paradigm, but it handles reverbs, delays, pitch-bending and all of my post-drive FX needs. I generally use the phone interface for programming and only use the on-board buttons for selecting different patches. My H9 is the single constant on an ever-evolving/growing pedal board because I haven't found anything that can replace the functionality in the same form factor. There is no better way to know that someone doesn't know the first thing about the H9.Ĭost: Even if one uses the H9 for a few delays, a few reverbs, a compressor/boost, and some modulation it's a bargain compared to comparable individual pedals like Strymons.Ĭlearly there are different strokes for different folks. Time and again I read posts from people who claim they have or have had an H9 but think it can only provide one effect at a time.
#Change h9 hotswitch control Patch
Reliability: I used to have a board with all kinds of pedals and patch cables and power supplies, etc, It was a total pain to track down the problem whenever something went wrong, Moving that complexity to the digital domain simplifies all things physical and improves reliability.

Set those up ahead of time and the H9 provides way more live control than physical knobs and fingers. the H9 has real time expression pedal control over up to 10 knobs all at once. Knobs: physical ones are in short supply. Also, Eventide recently updated their factory presets so that the first 20 (of 100) serve up bread and butter presets on a silver platter.

But once you dial it in, it is really good. I'm a big H9 fan/owner but even I have to admit that you are right about two things: It can be a pain to dial in all the parameters and it does have options overkill.
